Students will choose the themes that inspire our curriculum. Within these thematic studies each student will have the opportunity each month to learn and teach through ISP’s. In consideration of age based learning standards, we will provide the necessary tools for investigation, documentation, and presentation. The subject and depth of study will depend on the interest of each child. Environmental Education Spending time by a creek or at our outdoor learning site will pique students’ natural curiosity. Scientific and ecological concepts will be taught through experiments, stories, games, and nature journaling. Understanding local ecology and our human place within it will help each student develop their own sense of place. Physical Education & Team Building Students will activate their brain and body through movement and physical challenges. Practicing cooperation, problem solving skills, trust, and self-reliance will build a strong individual within a strong group. Service Learning Projects Students will be given age appropriate knowledge to increase their awareness of how individuals and communities interact with their environment (be it stream, neighbors, or city). They will explore ways they can make a positive impact in their homes and communities, then lead or participate in 3- 5 projects each year. These projects could be as simple as restoring a stream bank, or involved as organizing a dance for a retirement center. Artistic Expression Students will have the supplies and support to express their ideas, knowledge, emotions and curiosities through art! The art studio will provide a place to be messy, creative and practice respect for simple tools. Field Trips! Students will be on the move! We believe learning happens best through personal experience and community connections. Be it the library, senior center, plays, university, or parks, these trips are the beginning to a better understanding of this big big world. |
